More Than Two Drinks a Day Could Increase Health Risk, Study Says


According to Australian health officials, having two standard drinks a day could be risky. A draft report released just in time for Christmas by the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia is alerting people about alcohol consumption.

The released guidelines say that adults should not consume more than 10 standard drinks per week, to reduce severe effects on their health from alcohol. People should consume approx 1.4 drinks a day.

As mentioned in the guidelines, no more than two standard drinks will reduce the health risk from alcohol. However, a review stated that the risk of death from alcohol stayed below 1% in the case of 10 standard drinks consumed per week.

Hence, drinking more than this level increases the lifetime risk of death, and drinking rarely or less on any occasion reduces the risk of alcohol-related injuries, guidelines conclude.

The findings, published by NHMRC, followed three years-long research into the advantages and disadvantages of alcohol consumption and its association with disease. The chief executive of the NHMRC said the guidelines do not intend to tell people how much they drink. We are just spreading awareness about the health risks associated with drinking alcohol, which helps us steer our lives to positive navigation and make beneficial decisions for our children, he added.

As per health information, there were in excess of 4,000 liquor-related deaths in Australia in 2017 and in excess of 70,000 medical clinic affirmations during the 2016-17 money-related year.
